Self-styled “hermaphrodite twins from the future,” Eva & Adele have turned their life and partnership into a work of art.
“somos nuestra obra de arte” said adele.
The pair, who—having supposedly returned in a spaceship from the future upon the fall of the Berlin Wall—refuse to disclose their real names, ages, or origins, make appearances at galleries, fairs, and other art world events, and like their precursors Gilbert & George, “don’t just go and do a performance in a gallery and then stop being Eva & Adele afterwards.” Shaved heads, full clownish makeup, and elaborately feminine costumes are trademarks of the duo’s identical appearance. “We are an artwork,” says Adele; “Wherever we are is museum,” reads their official website.
“hemos inventado nuestro propio sexo”
Though biologically male, Eva had her gender legally changed so the two could marry as women. “I’m neither a man nor a woman,” she says, however. “Neither is Adele. We’ve invented our own sex.”
BERLIN, GERMANY – SEPTEMBER 20: Eva and Adele look at a work by Martin Eder at the “art berlin contemporary” art trade fair at The Station on September 20, 2014 in Berlin, Germany. The fair, also referred to as “abc”, is taking place at three venues in Berlin and runs from September 18-21. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
